To The Bitter End

5 / 10

As with the Grainne Duffy CD I've just reviewed, this is another new CD from a new talent, and similarly not someone from the X Factor/Pop Idol/Fame Academy production line of evil, soulless, corporate blandness.

Paul Sherry played on Duffy's CD, and she plays here on his. He is also a blues/rock guitarist from Ireland, but unlike Duffy I don't think that he has the voice to match his guitar style. To me he sounds too gruff and rough. Some people like this vocal style, and it would work for a track or two, but a whole CD of it is too much for my ears. His song writing is good, and his guitar playing is good, I'm just not overly impressed with his vocal style.

We Don't Stand a Chance kicks off proceedings and is followed by Stick with me to the End, a real fusion of country/blues/rock. Roll On trots along well, then there is more good playing on Deeper.

The Damage is Done comes next, and then there's Too Many Miles which has an Eagles feel to some of the riffs. Just Wondering features some more good soloing, Reckless bops along nicely with a blues feel and then Anda is an instrumental track and the album closes with slower acoustic number Give it all that you Got which has a feel of Jon Bon Jovi "Blaze of Glory" about it (sorry, but it does).

An album of great guitar playing, it all depends on how you take to Sherry's vocal style - luckily you can find out by listening in on his web site.
