    World TV Interview Transcripts

    Thursday 8th January 2009

    Noel Clarke

Q: Can you tell us a bit about the award you've been nominated for?

A: I've just been for the Orange Rising Star Bafta. I just feel amazing, it's an incredible honour to be in the category especially amongst the other nominees who are fantastic in their own right. I'm just ecstatic, you know 2008 was a great year for me and it's great to start 2009 with such recognition on this level by the industry, so I'm ecstatic, thanks.

Q: What do you think of your fellow nominees? What's the feeling like this year?

    A:
The feeling this year is amazing. I watch their films and I feel a little bit like the underdog. I think people love an underdog sometimes so hopefully people will come out and support me and we can do well with this.

Q: Do you think you stand a good chance?

A: I never like to tempt fate. It's just fantastic to be nominated. Honestly, it's fantastic to be nominated. I feel like this is kind of like winning already without being cheesy about it. It's just fantastic to be nominated in the category with such great people and we'll see what happens on the night.

    Toby Kebbell

Q: Can you tell us a bit about the award you've been nominated for?

A: I've been nominated for the Rising Star Award, which is voted for by the public at orange.co.uk/bafta. Yeah, I've been nominated for the Orange Rising Star Award and it's phenomenal.

Q: How does it feel to be nominated?

A: I've been very blessed. I had a year where RocknRolla came out and it did very well and I got lots of critical acclaim.

Q: What do you think of the other nominees?

A: It feels great. It's got one of my favourite actors, Michael Cera, George Michael from Arrested Development. It's got Noel Clarke in it and Rebecca Hall - all great, phenomenal people in this category. You win either way. You win just by being nominated, because you get associated with BAFTA which is phenomenal so it's an honour whatever the competition is.

Q: What would it mean to you to win the award?

A: I guess it would mean I was the most Rising Star. I've no idea. I couldn't tell you until I win it - if I win it, which I probably won't now! I've jinxed myself so never mind.

    Kelly MacDonald

Q: What do you think of this years nominees?

A: I'm delighted with the shortlist. I think this was a really strong year. It was a bit worrying trying to get it down to five. It's much harder than you think. I'm very happy with the final five.

    Q: Who's your favourite?

A: It's hard to say really - Michael Fassbender I thought was tremendous in Hunger. Really incredible. I hadn't seen him before and so it's that moment of a total power house performance and you've not had any lead up to this person so I'm really interested to see what he does in the future.

    Q:
Can you tell us what makes this award so important?

A: I think this is just such a special award because Mary Selway was what this award is doing - that's what she did. She discovered so many amazing young actors. She just had such an eye. She's so missed. I think this is just the most amazing way of treasuring her memory and I think she'd be really pleased. I think she'd know all of these young actors personally already.

Q: How do you feel about the shortlist this year? Any surprises?

A: I think the really good news is it's a great shortlist. Every year- this is now the fourth year - you always want to be sort of surprised and delighted by the shortlist. I have to say this year it's absolutely true. I make no bones about the fact last year I didn't get the Shia LaBeuof thing at all. I thought Sam Riley should have won. I thought he very much epitomised what I think the award is about, which is getting somebody on the cusp of stardom. Somebody who is more than a newcomer but they're not yet an established face. This year you look at that list and it's absolutely full of those kinds of people.

I'm on record saying I think that Michael Fassbender gave the best performance of the year in Hunger. I thought it was a really terrific role, a really gruelling role and he did absolutely brilliantly. Noel Clarke I've been a fan of for a long time - he's an actor, he's a writer, he's a director, he's really charismatic. I think he is on the cusp of really great things. Then you look at somebody like Rebecca Hall. She's got a couple of movies which I think are in awards contention as well as the Orange Rising Star Award. She's terrific in Frost/ Nixon which is a real heavyweight drama and it's hard to hold your own in a film like that and she does really really well.

Toby Kebbell was in Control of course alongside Sam Riley so I kind of feel that him being nominated is a chance to get it right this year. He was great in Control and it was such a great movie and a real font of young talent. I think it's a really great list. Michael Cera I would say is the one most people will already know. Most teenagers will have seen at least one movie with him in. He's terrific in Juno; Infinite Playlist he's really good in as well and people will know him from Superbad.

If I had to choose somebody, my money to some extent is on Noel Clarke. You know, he's been in Doctor Who, people will know him from that and as I said he's very charismatic but I've been wrong every year up until now, I don't see any reason to change that.

Q: How important is it to have an award like this and how can it help to kick-start a young actor's career?

A: To understand the importance of the Orange Rising Star Award the best thing to do is to look at what happened to James McAvoy's career. James McAvoy was the first winner - by a great popular vote he was the first winner. When he was nominated he was very well respected and well known but not what you would think of as being a star. Now he's been in huge Hollywood movies, he's been in more intelligent British movies. He's done a wide range of stuff and he's been a huge supporter of the award ever since he won it. He's quite clear that the award really really helped kick-start his career and move it on to the next level.

That's the point - it's not a newcomer award. It's an award that recognises somebody that's already done a body of work but is about to become a star and I think if you look at James McAvoy's career he absolutely epitomised what it was about the award that was significant. Now I think with this year's list we have pretty much five contenders who are all in exactly that same position. They've all done great work but they're all on the cusp of stardom.
