Slumdog Millionaire Favourite For Oscar In All Nominations
SLUMDOG Millionaire is the early favourite for all 10 Oscar categories in which it has been nominated this year, according to Betfair customers. In the market for the biggest prize of all, Best Motion Picture, the rags-to-riches story is 1-2, with nearest challenger The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at 9-2.
Best Director also looks likely to add to the Slumdog tally, with Danny Boyle an 8-15 shot to win. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is second again, with David Fincher 4-1 to pip Boyle to the award.
In what would cap an amazing career turnaround, Mickey Rourke leads the field in the Best Actor category for his role in The Wrestler, at odds of 5-6. It looks like being a two-man grapple for the crown with Sean Penn. A 2003 Oscar winner in this category, Penn is available at 7-4 for his role in Milk playing California's first openly gay elected official, with the other three nominees seemingly out of contention.
Could it be sixth time lucky for Kate Winslet?
The Brit will look to win her first Oscar for her Leading Actress role in The Reader. This category is closer than most with Winslet, odds-against at 11-10, facing a fight with Anne Hathaway, currently at 15-8, to get her hands on the golden statuette. The other contenders are Meryl Streep for Mamma Mia (odds 7-1), Angelina Jolie for Changeling (odds 12-1) and Melissa Leo for Frozen River (odds 15-1).
Heath Ledger is one of the shortest priced favourites to win in any category this year, just 1-9 to win a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as the Joker in the Dark Knight.
Betfair spokesman Michael Robb said: "Slumdog Millionaire looks set to follow up its box office records by winning awards left, right and centre next month, with the film currently favourite with Betfair punters in all ten categories in which it has been nominated.
"It seems that there are many punters out there backing Slumdog to make them millionaires come 22nd February."
