Independent documentary Disarm hits the UK

London, UK - March 3rd 2009 - IndiePix, the Internet-based distributor of independent films, has announced the UK DVD launch of Disarm, one of the non-fiction industry's most compelling documentary films. The film spans many countries to look at how, despite a global ban, millions of landmines continue to claim the lives of men, women and children every day. It was co-directed by Mary Wareham, long-time activist and leader of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), and photojournalist Brian Liu.

Disarm has now been released to a UK, US and Canadian audience and will be one of the first films to be available over the Internet using IndiePix's unique 'DVD-on-Demand' technology, which is due to be formally launched in April 2009. IndiePix is the only channel where Disarm - the complete DVD - can be delivered electronically to consumers and burned to disc on their Mac or PC disc writer. The film can also be purchased as a DVD from stores in the UK, US and Canada, and online at Amazon and Netflix.

The documentary's powerful photojournalism includes footage of war-ravaged communities in isolated nations such as Burma, Colombia and Iraq, including exclusive scenes shot by Afghan deminers. A lot of the footage was gained in areas where the filmmakers could have been arrested or killed for trespassing. As a result, extraordinary footage of warehouses stockpiling millions of Soviet-made mines was captured on film for the world to see.

Bob Alexander, President at IndiePix, said: "Documentaries of the 21st Century have an immense power to provide uncensored examination of issues that could otherwise be swept under the carpet. Princess Diana created a huge amount of publicity around the issue of landmines, however in recent years this has faded and organisations, such as the ICBL, have had to work immensely hard to make sure people don't forget what is still going on.

"Disarm has literally catapulted the issue into a global spotlight and allows people to see - almost at first hand - how much of a threat to life landmines still pose. A lot of the footage in this documentary was gained at great danger to the lives of the directors and camera crew. IndiePix is very pleased to be able to play a part in making this very important film available to a global audience," concluded Bob Alexander.
