Al Jazeera English Secures Exclusive Interview with
Radovan Karadzic for Premiere Episode of The Rageh Omaar Report
Doha, Qatar - February 2 3, 2010 - Al Jazeera English is proud to announce the launch of The Rageh Omaar Report, a new programme that will air monthly on the channel. The first edition, The Secret Life of Radovan Karadzic, will run at 1900GMT on February 24th, 2010, ahead of the resumption of Karadzic's trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
In this compelling documentary, award-winning journalist Rageh Omaar travels to Serbia and Bosnia to investigate the decade-long period spent in hiding by the former Bosnian Serb leader, and examines his legacy in present-day Bosnia and beyond.
In an exclusive interview from his cell in The Hague, Karadzic tells of his years on the run, and of his self-proclaimed "misfortunate" role in the war. While retracing the history of this brutal conflict, Omaar meets with victims who accuse Karadzic of war crimes, as well as those, including his daughter Sonja, who revere him as a national hero.
Following the launch of The Secret Life of Radovan Karadzic , The Rageh Omaar Report will continue as a series of one-hour investigative documentaries in which Omaar reports on the world's most important current affairs stories.
In future episodes, Rageh Omaar will explore the reality of Zimbabwe's unity government, and examine Turkey's burgeoning regional influence and reputation as an international peacemaker.
"With his remarkable and varied experience Rageh is well positioned to provide much-needed new context and insights into the most important global news stories and their central characters," said AJE Director of Programmes, Max Uechtritz.
Rageh Omaar stated: "I've always been drawn to reporting first-hand from the field on events that change history, societies and people's destinies. The Rageh Omaar Report gives me the chance to do this and more. I'll revisit the issues, conflicts and debates that have fallen out of the international headlines to find the truth of what's happening after the cameras and reporters have gone. And I will explore the personal experiences of the people behind a series of remarkable untold stories."
Rageh Omaar has anchored programmes for AJE since its inception in 2006 and his remarkable career includes distinguished international reporting and presenting roles with the BBC, Channel 4, ITV1 and Granada.
