Review of Saint, The: Volume 2

    7 / 10

    Introduction

Lets get one thing straight for a start. Val Kilmer is NOT The Saint. For me Simon templar will always be Roger Moore. Pre-Bond Roger Moore who was the first entertainer to discover the powerful weapon known as `The Eyebrow` way before The Rock of WWF fame.

This disc contains four episodes of the Saint, curiously numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6. One wonders why episodes 1 and 2 are on a disc of their own.

    Video

For programmes that were originally broadcast in Autumn 1962, the quality of the picture is very good. It has that clarity that really seems to shine out in black and white.

A 4:3 image that has had some very good work done to it to make it so free of dirt and noise. It is stable and does give a good show.

This is a Carlton release and the quality of image is this good across all the releases I have seen from Carlton.

    Audio

Dolby Digital that sounded as expected when converted to both stereo and Pro-Logic. Then again, are you really buying this sort of title for an aural rollercoaster?

    Features

It`s nice to be able to write more than a few words in this section. This disc is supplemented with subtitles and interactive menus as one would expect, but also with a factfile on the Volvo that Moore both drove and owned, a stills gallery and a list of the original Saint novels.

    Conclusion

Very enjoyable. Not the most visually spectacular or amazing sounding disc but fun all the same. The Saint is and was an all time classic and Roger Moore really does put his all into the roll, although you wouldn`t notice it by looking!

Lets hope that Carlton release some more of these and maybe some of the other classic TV series from the era. Personally I long for the day that someone releases `Out` (Frank Ross is Out) from the 70`s.
