MyVelo - Design your own bike

New British cycling brand MYVELO is changing the way people shop for bikes by giving consumers the chance to personalise their bike.

The bikes can be personalised online at www.myvelo.co.uk using the ingenious Build Your Bike configurator.

You can choose the colour of your frame, wheels, mudguards saddle and grips from a range of six colours. It's a lot of fun and the possibilities are endless. A simple click and your bike, built in MYVELO's workshop in West London, will be delivered in around a week - all for just £375 including delivery.

Designed and built to a good specification the bikes are Hybrid Sports cycle making them ideal for both leisure and commuting. Available in men's and women's frames the bike comes with 21 speed Shimano gears, a lightweight alloy frame and puncture resistant tyres.

'Cycling is a great way to save money, keep fit and have fun,' says MYVELO founder Raj Tandon. 'MYVELO gives consumers choice and enables them to personalise their bike. If they want blue mudguards with a green frame then why shouldn't they have it!?'

How Raj came up with the concept

I went to buy a new hybrid bike for around £400. Having decided on a model I realised that I had to buy the bike in the colour it came in, I had no option. This got me thinking. Why is it that we are unable to choose the colour of a bike? After all we live in the 21st century, an age of tremendous technological achievement and yet, I find it strange that if I purchase a new bike I am unable to personalise the bike in a way that I can if I were to buy a new car.

Assembling a bike is a relatively simple process compared to manufacturing a car. Despite this relative simplicity, it appears that none of the bike manufacturers deems it necessary to offer customers a choice of colours. Henry Ford in 1909 said "You can have any colour you want as long as it's black". Can this apply to bikes in the year 2011? Apparently so!

Google to the rescue! I searched the internet and found no one really offered the concept of personalised bikes, apart from a clothing company in the States.

That's when I had my Eureka moment! Why not offer a bike where you can personalise your bike by choosing the colour of a number of components.just like you would when buying a car.

As an entrepreneur, we live for these Eureka moments. They are few and far between but when you get one you simply have to act on it, and act I did.

After some considerable research and much thought I decided to launch a business offering customers the option of being able to personalise their bike…and so the company MYVELO has been formed. Our proposition "personalised bikes…made to order", all for £375 incl. delivery.

It's been a lot of fun and I will be sharing my exciting journey and the challenges faced in starting the business.

I hope this simple yet obvious idea catches on and that in a couple of years, we will all be able to personalise our bikes and relish in the choices available.
