Review for The Greatest Superstars of the 21st Century
Over the past decade we have seen the rise of many WWE Superstars. People such as John Cena and Randy Orton who are seen as the future of the busines. Alkso during the decade we saw people cement their legacy with a run in the main event such as Triple H, Jeff Hardy and Eddie Guerrero or improve on their already impressive legacy with even more amazing moments like Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker.
Thankfully the list of twenty superstars (nineteen and a montage about the Divas) is not a 20-1 list. This is perfect as it means that we don't have to argue about why is this person higher than that one and so on. Of the twenty included I don't have an issue with anyone and really it is difficult for me to think if anyone is missing. All the people who held the world title during this time are included (apart from Hulk Hogan, RVD, CM Punk and The Miz) and the only obvious omission is Chris Benoit, but that is understandable.
The DVD features a collection of two-four minute highlight reels with people commenting about the superstar and what they mean to the busines. I don't usually like this, but on this set it makes a lot more sense and though a bit more time for each would have helped, after each selection I understood why they were on the list.
Two disks featuring twelve matches are included that feature everyone from the list, except Jeff Hardy (which I understand what with him currently being in the rival company) and Stone Cold Steve Austin which just baffles me.
It seems that WWE have this new thing of including rare and obscure matches on recent sets. In a way I understand why they do it, but when you think of a great The Rock match the one you think of will probably not be his Summerslam match against Booker T. Same with John Cena who is represented with one eight man tag match that really didn't highlight why he's seen by many as the WWE Superstar of the Decade. Personally I would have included his hour long Raw match against Shawn Michaels, which proved just how good both of them are.
Now if you are thinking twelve matches is a little low, the reason is that one of them is the Iron Man Match between Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle, which was one of the best matches of the decade and quite frankly it is worth the price of the set alone as it is so good. The rest of the matches are good, but are not selections I would have went with.
The Greatest Superstars of the 21st Century is a good DVD. It is a great overview of the decade and what it had to offer. Though the match choices are a little odd, I still enjoyed them and the whole set is worth it for the Lesnar/Angle match alone. This is all in all a great set that with a few tweaks and a few different matches could have been perfect.
