Review for WWE: Steve Austin:The Most Popular Superstar Of All Time
If you love Stone Cold Steve Austin and want a 4 Disk set dedicated to him, give me a hell yeah!
HELL YEAH!
Stone Cold Steve Austin is arguably one of the most popular WWE Superstars of all time... Yes I know there are cases for Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and The Rock, but he certainly one of them and after watching this set it is hard to argue.
Over four disks we get a nice documentary covering Austin's career from his humble beginnings in USWA, his rise in WCW and subsequent firing, his brief stint in ECW and then finally his debut in WWE. Of course, we get to see how he entered as The Ringmaster and was nothing special, but then after being reminded by his wife to drink his tea before it went 'stone cold' an icon was born.
Stone Cold's rise began at the 1996 King of the Ring where he coined the infamous 'Austin 3:16 says I just whooped your ass' and from there the sky was the limit. The documentary looks at his feud with Bret Hart, his injury by Owen Hart, recovery and return as the Toughest SOB in the WWE and feud with Mr McMahon which saw him become even more popular and finally cement himself as WWE Champion.
The documentary then looks at a number of points in his career including his heel turn at Wrestlemania 17 which even Austin now regrets and him leaving the company the year later for what he calls dumb booking and when you hear the story it's difficult to argue. Finally we get to see his final match against The Rock and his brief appearances which all end with his induction into the Hall of Fame.
The first disk is full of extra footage that is not included on the documentary including a great look at the origins and popularity of the Stone Cold Stunner. The rest of the three disks feature eleven matches that do much to prove just why he was so popular. These include his excellent I Quit match against Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 13, and match against HBK at Wrestlemania 14 with an even better alternate commentaries on both. The fact that there are only eleven matches is a bit odd, though I would suggest you should consider this set an accompany piece to his Stone Cold Truth and Legacy DVDs.
The fourth disk is just jampacked with vignettes and interviews and just proved how great Stone Cold was on the mic. After watching these you almost laugh at the fact that when he first entered the WWE he was given Ted Dibiase as a Mouthpiece because 'he couldn't talk.'???
Steve Austin:The Most Popular Superstar Of All Time is a great set and certainly one that all Stone Cold fans should own. It is true that there are some matches that are missing, but the ones that are on here are pure gold and as such make me happy to watch them again and again. This is one of the best DVD sets WWE have produced... and that's the bottom line, because I said so!
