Review for WWE Hell in a Cell 2014
I usually hate the 'themed' PPVs and the one that suffers the most is Hell in a Cell. This is simply because before the introduction of the PPV, Hell in a Cell was the ultimate ace up the sleeve of any WWE star. They feud for a few months trade victories and championships until finally it all has to end in HELL IN A CELL!!! Now it's 'I'm going to wrestle you in Hell in a Cell... because we don't really have a choice it's the name of the PPV!'
That being said, at least there are only two Cell matches and they both meant something despite the Cell not being needed. In my opinion you should keep the Cell for one Main Event match, so you don't see the same spots over again. This is also my issue with multiple ladder matches (as we will later see with TLC). This PPV is pretty good and is packed with some great matches. The main event between Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose was a great way to end that feud and even the Cena/Orton Cell match had its moments.
2 out of 3 Falls for Intercontinental Championship
Dolph Ziggler vs. Cesaro
From a technical point of view, this was the match of the night. Both put on an amazing display. But in all honesty the match felt a little flat. Maybe this was because it didn't feel like it meant anything. It felt like two guys trying to show the WWE Universe how great they are in the ring and they did that... but with no real consequences. Some great moments throughout though from both.
Nikki Bella vs. Brie Bella
It is a shame that both of these are not as great in the ring as they look. The storyline and the stipulation was interesting and made for a great momentum into the match. But... the actual match was a mess and the outcome made no sense.
WWE Tag Team Championship
Goldust and Stardust vs. The Usos
I love both teams and this is another great match from both. What I have really begun to appreciate from both teams is that their matches feel like 'classic' tag team wrestling, the kind I grew up on. There is a lot of double-teaming, isolating individuals, hot tags, it makes for a much more compelling match and both teams are perfect at doing it.
Hell in a Cell for Title Shot
John Cena vs. Randy Orton
It is so surprising that this is not the main event and hopefully this proves that WWE want to put their faith in their younger stars. This match had its moments, but not many. It was given enough time to mean something and if you are a fan of Orton or Cena you will enjoy it. Though we all knew going in who was going to win.
US Championship
Sheamus vs. The Miz
This match is worth it for the antics of Mizdow doing stuntwork for The Miz. The match itself was fine, nothing special, but always good to see Sheamus and he looks amazing in this match.
Rusev vs. The Big Show
This has such a great build... and such a disappointing conclusion. I understand the whole 'streak' can sometimes make a character, but Rusev is not Goldberg, he is not the Roadwarriors or even The Undertaker, he is just another superstar. Despite how hot Lana is, it is now at the point where she needs to do more than just be a mouthpiece. The match itself is too short to mean anything.
WWE Divas Championship
AJ Lee vs. Paige
Seven minutes is not long enough for a match. WWE need to understand that. Unless it is a Goldberg-style squash, you cannot invest in a match that is less than ten minutes long. This is not a TV show that has time restrictions, they could easily have given this a few extra minutes to help build up the momentum. Both look great and work so well in the ring and it is sad that they cannot be given more time to show this.
Hell in a Cell
Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose
It could be argued that apart from Cena/Lesnar, the feud between Rollins and Ambrose has been the most important one of the year. It is odd that a year previously they had worked together as part of The Shield, but now rivals. Ambrose starting the match on the top of the Cell is shades of Mick Foley from 1998. The following chaos, even before the actual 'match' started was just excessive and crazy, but certainly amazing to watch. As for the ending... probably the creepiest thing I have seen in a very long time.
Hell in a Cell 2014 was a great PPV, certainly one to re-watch. There are enough matches and moments to come back to and what makes this PPV great is that it is not just the Main Event that is great, there tag match was amazing, the opener between Ziggler and Cesaro was easily the match of the night from a technical point of view. There is nothing on here that is unwatchable and sometimes to watch a whole event and not want to press Fast Forward is a sign of a great PPV. Hopefully this is WWE putting their faith in the new faces they have such as Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose and this might make the product better than ever.
