Review for Sting: Into the Light!

Sting is one of those people that WWE fans always respected. Even during his time in WCW, Sting was seen as a man the fans could trust and someone who would put everything into putting on a great match. This documentary shows his coming to WWE for the first time ever in his career and looks at some of the most pivotal moments in his illustrious time in WCW.

There are multiple interviews with the likes of Ultimate Warrior, Ric Flair, Lex Luger, Rick Steiner and more. We get to see his training and debut with Ultimate Warrior, his great feud with Ric Flair, change to The Crow gimmick and feud with the nWo. This leads to the epic encounter with Hulk Hogan at Starrcade 1997, which had an amazing build of almost a year, but sadly the pay off was not the amazing match we all expected.

We also get to hear about being born again following the stress of the business. It is nice to see that Sting did not spiral into the self destruction that many in the wrestling business have been destroyed by. The last Nitro, with the final match against Flair in WCW is discussed and also why Sting did not come over the WWE at that time like so many people did, though he doesn't go into much detail he does briefly mention he was in TNA for the past eight years before finally coming to WWE.

Throughout we get to see him being exposed to the WWE machine from the likes of marketing and promotions. Oddly, though we are told he is going to meet with Vince McMahon, we don't get to see it? What the documentary leads to is, of course, his WWE ring debut at Survivor Series and match against Triple H at Wrestlemania.

Once the documentary is over there is still a great deal of extra footage (Though oddly they are not given their own section on the first disk) such as Sting talking about his promo style, Tyson Kidd debating whether Sting or Bret Hart created the Scorpion Deathlock/ Sharpshooter first and looking at the rappelling for Sting from the rafters that he did for a number of years.

Twenty matches feature the likes of Ric Flair, Cactus Jack, Great Muta, Stunning Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan, Vader, Bret Hart amongst others. There is also him teaming with Ultimate Warrior in his early days which is just brutal to watch and also him tagging with Lex Luger against The Steiner Brothers which is pretty good.

They include Sting's first title attempt against Ric Flair, which is proof that Flair is the best man in the business for helping getting people over and that this is clearly the match that cemented Sting as the future of the business. There are matches missing, but any that are were already on the previous set that was released last year and it is a shame that they didn't hold off on this set for a month or so, so that they could have his excellent recent match against Seth Rollins at Night of Champions.

Sting: Into The Light is a really good set for Sting fans. For those who bought his 'Greatest Matches' set last year, this is an excellent accompaniment and though it is still too brief in regards to the history and I do wish that the scenes where he was watching some of the matches had been included in full as an extra, maybe as a commentary, but the whole set is perfect. If you are curious about Sting and want to know more, then this will give you that brief overview to one of the most enigmatic wrestlers to ever step in the ring.
