Review of Raw Nerve
Introduction
Mario Van Peebles stars as a cop, a maverick cop, who wants to cash in a favour from his ex-partner. Blair (Van Peebles) covered for Ethan (Zach Galligan) when they were rookies, when Ethan lost it during a shooting.
Blair now needs help and coerces Ethan to back him up to save his career, only Blair goes too far. He trusts no one, he cares for no-one apart from himself and his freedom.
Ethan must decide whether to help his friend or turn his back on the one person who saved him all those years ago.
Video
The picture is presented in 4:3 full screen and can only be described as disappointing. The video has a softness to it that at times almost borders on the blurred.
There is no noise at such and very little graining, it`s just that it is wearing to watch as you feel that you really should go and get your eyes tested.
Unfortunately this is not the first VCI release that I have felt this way about.
Audio
Again, not brilliant. Stereo soundtrack is not really cutting the mustard for a film only released 2 years ago.
The stereo track does it`s best but is not the most enveloping aural experience.
Even a pro-logic mix would be miles better than plain stereo. Alright, most DD/DTS amps can attempt to re-mix into DPL etc. but it`s not always a pleasant experience.
Features
Scene access and a trailer.
Conclusion
This is a low budget film (I expect) that is trying to be big. The story is not bad if not original, bad cop tries to become good cop etc.
The supporting cast is okay, if not the best known of actors, and they do a good job.
I am always suspicious when you see the lead actors name is also shared by one of the production companies, but this time the illusion of casting is just about pulled off.
An enjoyable one watch film that is let down by the video quality more than anything.
