Energised: Taking the Next Generation to the Next Level is the obligatory making of featurette. This lasts 23:46 and is in HD, and it looks at how they went from the NTSC video release to this HD release. It involves a whole lot of scanning of original film negative, and re-creation and re-compositing of effects.

You also get more promos for the show, two for Encounter at Farpoint, and one for the season as a whole listed as Promos, a separate and discrete Season 1 Promo, and an Introduction to the Series, all of which last a handful of minutes each and are in SD.

Stardate Revisited: The Origin of Star Trek: The Next Generation is a documentary created for this Blu-ray on the creation of the show, split into three HD featurettes. Part 1: Inception lasts 28:09, Part 2: Launch lasts 32:13, and Part 3: The Continuing Mission lasts 32:42. You get the usual cast and crew interviews, behind the scenes clips, some gag reel footage, and clips from the show, with plenty of candid information that you won’t have heard before.


There is a Gag Reel proper on this disc that runs to 8:10 SD and it’s of VHS quality.

Carried over from the original DVD release are The Beginning (18:01), Selected Crew Analysis (15:18), The Making of a Legend (15:27), and Memorable Missions (17:04), all in SD.

Season 2

Disc 1: 1) The Child, 2) Where Silence Has Lease, 3) Elementary, Dear Data, 4) The Outrageous Okona, 5) Loud as a Whisper

Energised: Season 2 Tech Update looks at how the series changed from the first season back in 1988, as well as some of the challenges in bringing this season to Blu-ray in 2012. This lasts 7:56 HD.


You get a 1988 Reading Rainbow segment where Levar Burton took the programme audience behind the scenes of Star Trek The Next Generation to see who a TV show is put together. This lasts 17:03 SD. There is also a 2012 Reading Rainbow iTunes promo which lasts 1.36 HD.

The 1988 On Air Season Two promo lasts 1:08 SD.

The only extra on this disc carried forward from the DVD is the Archival Mission Log – Departmental Briefing Year Two: Production, which lasts 17:32 SD.

Disc 2: 6) The Schizoid Man, 7) Unnatural Selection, 8) A Matter of Honor, 9) The Measure of a Man

The extras on this disc are all about one of TNG’s most highly acclaimed dramatic episodes, The Measure of a Man. When first put together, it ran considerably longer than the required 45 minutes for syndication, and had to be edited down for broadcast. First-time scriptwriter Melinda M. Snodgrass was gifted a copy of that original edit on VHS tape, and that tape formed the foundation of creating an extended cut of The Measure of a Man, which is presented here running to 57:35. Most of the additional scenes are interesting character moments, although some stray a little too far from Roddenberry’s no interpersonal conflict rule in the 24th Century. You also get a commentary on this version from Melinda Snodgrass, and Mike and Denise Okuda.


For the sake of curiosity, there is also the Hybrid Extended Version, which is a preliminary rough cut of the episode, referring to that VHS. While some scenes are in HD, most are from the videotape, featuring alternate takes, and a few more deleted scenes. While it is shorter at 55:50, the Hybrid Cut has no post-production, no special effects, no sound design or music, and no credit sequences. It’s just the live action dramatic sequences with insert cards or blue-screen where effects are meant to go.

Disc 3: 10) The Dauphin, 11) Contagion, 12) The Royale, 13) Time Squared, 14) The Icarus Factor

New to this release is the Gag Reel, which for this second season is taken from the original film, and is presented in 1080p HD. This lasts 10:30.

The Icarus Factor gets a deleted scene which lasts 1:12 and is presented in VHS quality SD.

Archive SD featurettes taken from the DVD include the Selected Crew Analysis: Year 2 (13:46), and Inside Starfleet Archives: Penny Juday Star Trek Coordinator (17:33).

Disc 4: 15) Pen Pals, 16) Q Who, 17) Samaritan Snare, 18) Up the Long Ladder, 19) Manhunt

There is an audio commentary on Q Who from Visual Effects Supervisor Dan Curry, director Rob Bowman, and Denise & Mike Okuda.

There is a pretty impressive set of SD deleted scenes on Up the Long Ladder, running to 8:02.

The DVD featurette on this disc is the Departmental Analysis Year 2: Memorable Missions, which lasts 16:33

Disc 5: 20) The Emissary, 21) Peak Performance, 22) Shades of Gray


Reunification: 25 Years After Star Trek: The Next Generation lasts 61:53, and in it the cast reunite to reminisce about their seven years working together on the TV show. It’s hosted by Rob Burnett, and features Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Levar Burton, and Wil Wheaton.

Making It So: Continuing Star Trek: The Next Generation, Part 1: Strange New Worlds (39:28), and Part 2: New Life and New Civilisations (42:01), has the cast, crew and fans look back at the reception for season 1, and the changes that were wrought for season 2, as well as issuing forth an abundance of colons.

From the DVD comes Archival Mission Log: Mission Overview Year Two (14:43 SD).

Season 3

The new extra content on this disc comprises the commentary on The Bonding from Ronald D. Moore, whose first ever script this was, alongside Mike and Denise Okuda.

The Offspring gets an audio commentary from Rene Echevarria and Denise & Mike Okuda.

In Memoriam: David Rappaport... The Most Toys guest starred Saul Rubinek as Kivas Fajo, but he was a last minute replacement for David Rappaport, who died during filming. This extra collects the scenes that he shot for the episode into a 5:07 HD reel.

The Gag Reel offers 8:37 of inadvertent humour.

Disc 6: 25) Transfigurations, 26) The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Inside the Writer’s Room lasts 70:52 HD, and despite the misplaced apostrophe, four TNG writers join moderator and host Seth MacFarlane for a roundtable discussion. This piece with Ronald D. Moore, Brannon Braga, Rene Echevarria, and Naren Shankar is well worth watching, an interesting insight into how episodes came about.


The Documentary accompanying Season 3, Resistance is Futile – Assimilating Star Trek: The Next Generation is once again split into three parts.

A Tribute to Michael Piller lasts 13:50 and features contributions from family, cast and crew.

The season 3 extras are well worth watching if you’re into the writing aspects of The Next Generation, with commentaries and featurettes all concentrating heavily on the writing process. However, if you want the full story, you’ll need to buy The Best of Both Worlds standalone Blu-ray, which has even more extras, including a cast commentary on that double episode.

Season 4

There is an audio commentary on Brothers from episode director Rob Bowman and Mike & Denise Okuda. It’s not the most illuminating track in the collection.

Disc 6: 25) In Theory, 26) Redemption, Part 1

In Conversation: The Star Trek Art Department lasts 67:29 HD. In it, Doug Drexler gathers Mike & Denise Okuda, Herman Zimmerman, Dan Curry and Rick Sternbach to discuss how art and design was consolidated and accomplished across all four Berman-era series, from TNG to Enterprise.

Relativity: The Family Saga of Star Trek: The Next Generation is another 3-part documentary, which as in the previous seasons offers a retrospective look at the making of that particular season, with interview s with cast and crew, looking at character arcs and notable episodes, as well as the season’s overall theme of family.

Part 1: Homecoming lasts 29:05, and Part 2: Posterity lasts 27:45, both in HD.

And that’s not a typo, just the manifestation of Paramount/CBS money-grubbing bastard nature. If you want to see Part 3 of the documentary, you have to buy the Redemption TNG movie standalone Blu-ray on which that featurette resides, despite the fact that you have both parts of Redemption on these discs here. It’s Best of Both Worlds all over again.

You get the Gag Reel which runs to 3:34 HD, and there are deleted scenes for 8 Season 4 episodes running to a total of, 23:30 HD.


Season 5

The audio commentary on Cause and Effect from Brannon Braga and Seth MacFarlane is pretty forgettable.

The audio commentary on The First Duty from writers Ronald D. Moore and Naren Shankar is a lot more agreeable.

You get three Archival Mission Log entries, A Tribute to Gene Roddenberry (28:23), Intergalactic Guest Stars (15:50), and Alien Speak (12:49) all in SD.

There is a 1:56 Deleted Scene on The Perfect Mate.

I, Borg gets an audio commentary from Mike and Denise Okuda along with the episode writer Rene Echevarria.

Disc 6: 25) The Inner Light, 26) Time’s Arrow, Part I

The Inner Light gets 7 minutes of Deleted Scenes. There is also a commentary featuring Mike & Denise Okuda alongside episode writer Morgan Gendel.

The Gag Reel for Season 5 lasts 7:33.


In Conversation: The Music of Star Trek – The Next Generation lasts 74:21 HD, and author of The Music of Star Trek hosts composers Dennis McCarthy, Jay Chattaway, and Ron Jones in a candid conversation about scoring music for the Star Trek The Next Generation and subsequent shows. If ever you had the feeling that Berman-Trek sounded like a wall of anonymous brass at times, you’ll learn the reason why here, as well as those notable episodes where the composers found a little freedom to express themselves.

The big documentary on Season 5 is Requiem: A Remembrance of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Part 1: The Needs of the Many lasts 29:58, and gets the writers perspective on the 5th season, interspersed with vintage interview footage with series creator Gene Roddenberry.

Part 2: The Needs of the Few lasts 28:59, and looks back at the year that Gene Roddenberry died, and some of the other notable moments from the fifth year, with input from the cast and crew. This time there is no mention of a third part to this featurette, and I suspect that you won’t have to buy a standalone copy of Time’s Arrow to be all up to date with extra features.

Season 6

New to this collection is Closed Set: A Tour of the Real Enterprise, which lasts 11:23 SD. In it, Mike and Denise Okuda narrate a home video tour of the Next Generation sets taped while the show was still in production.

You get HD deleted scenes for Journey’s End (2:28), Firstborn (4:12), Bloodlines (1:50), and Pre-emptive Strike (4:06).

There is an audio commentary on Pre-emptive Strike with Denise and Mike Okuda with writers Naren Shankar and Rene Echevarria.


Disc 6: 25) All Good Things...

The final Archive Mission Log lifted from the DVDs is The Making of “All Good Things...” in SD running to 17:44 SD.

New for this release is The Sky’s The Limit: The Eclipse of Star Trek: The Next Generation, a 3 part documentary.

Part One: Umbra lasts 29:43, Part Two: Penumbra is 28:44, and Part Three: Antumbra lasts 30:13. All are in HD, and look at the final year of Star Trek: The Next Generation from the points of view of the writers, the producers and the cast.

Finally there is Journey’s End: The Saga of Star Trek: The Next Generation, a 45:23 SD documentary filmed during the making of All Good Things... A retrospective of the prior seven years, and what promises Star Trek held in 1994, presented by Jonathan Frakes.
