Review of Tom Green: Something Smells Funny
Introduction
Tom Green has benefited from rather a lot of mainstream exposure recently - starring as "The Chad" in Charlie`s Angels, featuring in Road Trip (remember the intro and snake scene?) and more recently in a Right Guard advert on television.
Tom`s fame arose from something far from mainstream however - his American TV show features plenty of offbeat wacky scenes, which won`t be to everyone`s taste!
This DVD features a selection of scenes from the series...
Video
Video comes in 4:3 full-frame and is of reasonable quality - the show is relatively low budget, and often filmed outside with hand/shoulder held equipment.
The picture is free of dirt, but grainy at times. However, this isn`t a disc that you watch for reference picture quality - laughs are more important.
Audio
The sound comes in Dolby Digital Stereo (2.0) and is, like the video, of reasonable quality. Again, it won`t set the world on fire, but you can hear all the dialogue and punch lines - which is of course the main requirement of the disc.
Features
The extras on offer include some cast bios, a "Tom Green Timeline" and interviews with the crew talking about Tom`s antics.
The scene selection allows you to choose any of the sketches which is very handy for showing a couple of choice moments to friends...
The disc is packaged in a black Amaray case (my review copy didn`t contain an insert).
Conclusion
really not very funny at all (or not to me anyway) - but on the other hand some of the scenes had me howling with tears streaming down my face! One problem is that some gags are funny at first, but drag on too long and lose their appeal.
I`d say that this disc is very much suited to a night in with the lads and a few beers - toilet humour, smashing up the studio and painting pictures of lesbians on your mum`s car probably won`t appeal to too many of the fairer sex!
Of the 60 minute running time, I found perhaps 30 minutes of amusement, with the other 30 minutes fairly tedious. Video and sound are average, and the extras are not especially exciting, so I`d recommend this as one to rent unless you are a big fan and have seen the material before.
