Review for Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires

Chuck Steel is a lone wolf cop, who goes through partners like he goes through whisky, but must learn to trust himself and work with Van Rental to take down some evil Trampires (Vampires who feast on drunks) and avoid being fired by his emotional Captain who is getting to old for this.

This stop motion film is probably what would happen if the creators of South Park and Wallace and Gromit had a baby. This is definitely not a children’s film and the use of profanity is both excessive and brilliant. The throwback to the 1980s cop genre, the music, the crazy action is just wonderful and I loved every second of it.

The animation is very impressive with it looking real at times, reminding me of the Speed Demon sequence from Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker and then also looking like the best of Nick Park’s work. It was not surprising that the Writer/Director Mike Mort worked previously on Shaun the Sheep and the animation style is both crude and sophisticated at the same time. The gore also reminiscent of the stop motion work on Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead films.

I’m not sure whether this style would support multiple movies, but I could happily watch more of Chuck Steel’s adventures and maybe as a TV series it could work even better than it does here.

Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires is the funnest time I have had watching a film in a long time. If you are a fan of 1980s cop films, Hair Metal, Explosions, Blood, British humour and Bad puns then this is definitely a film to Chuck out... I mean check out.
