Review of Roger Ramjet
Introduction
The 1965 animated series Roger Ramjet features the bumbling daredevil and American Eagle Squadron leader Roger Ramjet and his crew Yank, Doodle, Dan, and Dee. Together they fight baddies like Noodles Romanoff and Henry Cabbage Patch. Roger`s secret weapon is his Proton Energy pill, which gives him the strength of twenty atom bombs for a period of twenty seconds.
Video
Roger Ramjet is presented on DVD in a pretty similar fashion to that which you`ll be used to if you`ve ever watched the show on television - colour, full-frame, pretty grainy, plenty of dirt and not especially brilliant!
As far as the visuals go, the animation is rather basic and once you`ve seen a couple of the episodes, you`ve seen most the action sequences - they are repeatedly used throughout all the episodes.
Audio
The sound comes in Dolby Digital Mono and despite being distinctly low-fi with plenty of hiss, adequately reproduces the unexciting mono soundtrack and increasingly irritating theme song.
Again, if you`ve watched Roger Ramjet on the television, you`ll know what to expect from the soundtrack.
Features
The extras consist of a Roger Ramjet game for one or two players - the object of which is to press the direction arrows depending on which box on-screen a baddie appears. Pretty tedious, and not easy to get back out of either!
The menus are animated in the style of Roger Ramjet.
Conclusion
I`ve seen various episodes of Roger Ramjet on the TV over the years, and never enjoyed it, so unsurprisingly a collection of sixteen episodes on one DVD isn`t my idea of an evening`s entertainment.
It`s also hard to imagine children enjoying the series given the wealth of far superior cartoons available from a variety of sources.
The video and sound are exactly as per the TV broadcasts and not very impressive and the extra interactive game is tedious. Therefore unless you are a devout Roger Ramjet fan, go and buy something else instead.
