Review of Withnail And I
Introduction
Apparently and until recently the producers and directors didn`t realise the cult following this movie has. Anchor Bay have now released their much anticipated special edition of Withnail and I, but will it please the masses?
Video
It has no anamorphic transfer, which for some DVD enthusiasts is the first if not last nail in the coffin. This said it is remarkably sharp in places but can show a little grain in darker scenes.
I do think this is down to the shoot rather than the DVD.
Audio
Steer clear of the DD 5.1 muxed mix. This is just the standard mono track re-mixed so the sound is spread through all speakers. Your kidding, I hear you cry, no this give a very strange feel to the dialogue track which come through as dominant from the rear speakers.
Features
On the plus you do get a brand new commentary with Paul McGann and Ralph Brown. Where`s Richard E. Grant I hear another cry. He can be found voicing his shot anecdotes in the amusing documentary "Withnail and Us."
There are also some behind the scenes photos and you get an A3 poster for you wall and a booklet.
Conclusion
Simple, I love the film and its on the disc, great!
