Review of Deep Star Six
Introduction
What can I say, an opportunity to watch some trash sci-fi from the late 80`s in all it`s special edition glory. The first thing I realised is that some things are best forgotten.
Before we carry on with the review lets just get the fact that this is a very average film that really pales when placed against other films of the period and genre like the Abyss, that out of the way now on with the review.
Video
The film is presented using a 2.35:1 anamorphic display that for the most part does a reasonable job for the age.
However there is a noticeable amount of ever present grain from the original print and some evidence of poor encoding in a few of the scenes with effects such as artifacting, shimmering and some colour wash.
Audio
The audio is nothing short of average, no Dolby 5.1 on this DVD just an average Dolby Pro Logic track that was possibly recorded a little on the quiet side.
Features
This disk features a little more then the average trailer, they managed to dig up the whole PR caboodle including the cheesy Behind the Scenes and Making Of`s.
There is also the surprise inclusion of a directors commentary that to be totally honest is not actually worth the effort, after starting off with some insights into the film that are actually quite interesting it drifts off into minutes of stilted silence.
Conclusion
As for content, this film is largely forgettable and really is not one I would long to own, that said I guess it would make a reasonable rental on a lonely Wednesday night with a giant bag of crisps.
It is interesting however to see what Sean S. Cunningham can come up with when he is not churning up his every present diet of House and Friday the 13th movies.
