Review of Go

Introduction

A friend of mine was given Go as a freebie when he bought his DVD player last year, and had never got around to watching it. Given the lack of anything of any interest on the TV last night, we decided to give it a try.

The film follows the fortunes of a group of young American friends at Christmas time. Ronna is about to get evicted from her apartment so decides to sell some drugs to make ends meet, Simon is off to Las Vegas with his friends and Claire is caught up in the middle. Also added to the equation are TV stars Adam and Zack, a drug dealer called Todd and a very angry bouncer...

Video

The video comes in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and is of a reasonably high standard throughout the movie, with no dirt or grain evident. The print has plenty of detail and is colourful and stable.

The film is very well made, with plenty of locations used to good effect as the story develops. In both Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Audio

The sound comes in Dolby Digital 5.1 and is also of a good standard. The film has a very good soundtrack, which blasts from all available channels and the subwoofer, but importantly the dialogue remains clear and understandable at all times.

Features

There are plenty of extras, which include 14 deleted scenes, which are worth watching if you`re interested in such things, 3 music videos, a behind-the-scenes featurette, trailer and director`s commentary track.

The disc is packaged in Black Amaray case, which contains a four-page colour booklet detailing the 28 chapter breaks.

Conclusion

The film starts quite slowly, but don`t let that put you off, when it gets going, it`s a surprisingly entertaining movie, with a good cast, great plot and plenty to keep you guessing right up to the end. The film tells the story of Ronna, Colin, Adam and Zack and Claire in separate segments before rounding them all off in one conclusion – very much in the mould of Guy Ritchie`s recent work. This works very well, each story is very different and interesting, and at each turn there is something unexpected so at you`re left wondering what is about to happen.

The video and sound are both good, and there is also a reasonable spread of extras. Go can often be picked up quite cheaply, and is well worth considering next time you see it languishing in a bargain bucket.
