Review of Wild Orchid
Introduction
The erotic drama Wild Orchid was made by director Zalman King in 1990 and stars Mickey Rourke, Jacqueline Bisset, Carre Otis and Assumpta Serna.
The film tells the story of two female lawyers working in Brazil and trying to tie up a property deal. When the young recruit, Emily, is left in Rio with a millionaire property developer, she becomes exposed to all sorts of sexual antics...
Video
The video is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, and is of above average quality, offering a stable image with plenty of colour and contrast, although not especially sharp. There is some grain, which is noticeable more on long-shots, with the dialogue scenes etc looking much cleaner.
The image is relatively free from dirt, although there is the occasional blemish on the print.
Audio
The soundtrack comes in a choice of English, Italian and Spanish, all in Dolby Digital 2.0, offering Dolby Pro-Logic. The sound quality is very disappointing, with a muffled vocal track, which is set too low - the music etc is at the correct volume, so turning up the sound merely invites deafness when the dialogue stops.
There is limited use made of the rear channels, which, as to be expected from Dolby Pro-Logic, offer low level occasional effects.
Features
The only extra on offer is the movie`s original theatrical trailer.
Conclusion
It`s amazing the drivel that people will tolerate to see the occasional buttock or breast in a film, and ultimately Wild Orchid is desperately uninteresting tedium that will have you reaching for the remote control to scan forwards to the next bit of nudity - the scenes inbetween are tiresome. The bad news is that the sex scenes aren`t particularly exciting either, perhaps a sign of how sex in films has changed over the last 12 years.
The video is above average, but the soundtrack is poor, with muffled vocals, and the only extra is the trailer.
Overall, this is one to rent or watch out on television, as the content is well below par on all fronts.
