Review of Music In High Places: Def Tones Live In Hawaii
Introduction
The Music in High Places team throw another DVD at us. This time The Deftones travel to Hawaii and punch out a few live songs as we pan and scan the local views. As usual with this series, the location outshines the pop group`s performances. On some occasions, when we leave the band and are treated to full widescreen ocean to land pans with background music, it feels like the BBC Holiday program and I`m just waiting for little Tom Cruise look-a-like Craig Doyle to appear!
I don`t know the Deftones muisc that well but most of the tracks on this DVD are pretty well rounded and sickly produced. You get...
Headup
Knife Party
Digital Bath
One Weak
The Boy``s Republic
Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)
Around the Fur
Feiticeira
Change (In the House of Flies)
Video
This MIHP 1.85.1 transfer is again top notch with high and sharp detail levels, not macro blocking to be seen anywhere plus blacks and whites that add an almost 3D feel to the whole shoot. See Hawaii ...oh yes, and the Deftones in full fabulous digital glory. If only I had a remove band button on my remote.
Audio
Video is excellent, sound is just OK. The Dolby Digital mix is a bit flat and lacks great bass punch. The surrounds are rarely used and you just don`t get that feeling of subtle envelopment that greater music DVDs provide. I keep saying this, but The Eagles: Hell Freezes Over Live in DTS is a benchmark by which all music DVDs should be measured.
Features
These are short and sweet, very short and not very sweet to be honest. You get...Making of Documentary, TV Spots, Interviews and Location footage plus a`Getting There` featurette. There`s no great wealth of info in these one watch dull pieces.
Conclusion
One for the fans! That`s either fans of The Deftones or fans of Hawaii, nothing more!
