Review of S Club Seeing Double

    5 / 10

    Introduction

Keeping with the flavour of successful musicians turned actors, S Club are the latest pop band to bring us their farewells in the form of a feature length movie. Much like the Spice Girls in `Spice World` (which was total garbage by the way), S Club - Seeing double`s release was almost coherent with the media frenzy surrounding the group`s imminent split.

It`s pretty obvious to the average movie-goer that any movie spawned from a pop franchise, is going to be just plain bad on so many levels. If you`ve ever been subjected to the laughable S Club ITV series, you`ll already have a taste of what kind of gibberish to expect. That said, I seem to remember my little sister prancing around the front-room mimicking the lyrics to the music in Spice World, so if done right, these movies can be entertaining to a younger audience, or devoted fans of the music.

    Video

It all looks very pretty, with the cast looking glamorous, and the props of the movie resembling that of a bad Westlife video. The picture quality is admirable, with solid colours & nice detail in the foreground, although it`s not as sharp as it could have been.

    Audio

The soundtrack is decent & includes most of S Club`s best-selling releases, although fans expecting a full-on musical will be disappointed, as rather amusingly, it`s the story that takes centre stage here, not the music.

The music has been wonderfully recorded, and is replicated onto the DVD medium nicely. The dialogue is crystal clear, although that`s more to do with the fact that the character`s lines are spouted like they`re being read in a pantomime audition.

    Features

Nothing really note-worthy addition wise, as it`s all pretty much bog standard stuff. You`ve got what many would consider compulsory with DVDs these days, with biographies, photo galleries, theatrical trailer(s), interviews with the cast, and a `making of` feature`. It`d have been nice to include a few games & such, such as trivia or something innovative, seeing as this release will more than likely be brought for the kids.

    Conclusion

There`s simply no getting away from the fact that this is an absolutely horrible film, with pretty much everything from script to acting being what you`d expect from a bunch of talentless puppets. The dialogue however is what really stands-out & is the worst I`ve ever witnessed in a movie, and it even out-does the acting performances in terms of awfulness. Let me give you an example of the turgid dialogue in this film, by bringing you a line which sets the standard for the entire movie. In this scene, a news reporter asks the female members of the band if any of them have had implants, when one of them answers "Oh yeah! Me! I had a cactus once only that I didn`t water it, and it died." Ok champ, whatever you say. I can only assume that this is supposed to be juvenile humour, but I don`t think any kid would know what an implant is, so that kind of defeats the object. The film is full of lame jokes like this, that don`t even raise a hint of a smile. Kids might laugh for the hell of it, but that`s because kids are dumb.

The songs are all there, and they sound pretty good, although the settings for the singing scenes are just totally cheesy. The problem is, there are no real twists to the performances, and they don`t really tie in with the movie or its story in anyway.

With all that said, I think there is some enjoyment to be had from this movie, say if you`re an infant with one hell of a snotty nose. I`m not sure if anybody of an older age could get anything from this, as the performances in the movie are very weak, both in acting & singing aspects.

Strictly for hardcore fans or dumb kids.
