Review of 52 Pick Up
Introduction
Just 2 years prior to the release of this film, another adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel 52 Pick Up was released. That was called The Ambassador, directed by J. Lee Thompson and starred Robert Mitchum, Ellen Burstyn, Rock Hudson and Donald Pleasence.
Obviously someone wasn`t impressed, as 52 Pick Up (the novel) was made into 52 Pick Up (the film) by John Frankenheimer. The cast list for this version seems less impressive though - Roy Scheider, Ann-Margret, Kelly Preston and Doug McClure don`t really quite hold up to those listed above do they?
The plot is outlined up above for you.
Video
Your usual MGM back catalogue 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, which looks quite good on the whole. There`s a little bit of dirt, dust and grain, but not masses. There are some good colours, reasonable detail levels and good contrast. On the whole it`s ok for a back catalogue effort.
Watch out for lots of nasty 1980s fashions and interior designs (and haircuts!)
Audio
A DD2.0 stereo soundtrack, which is again not too bad and it still lends a little tone and atmosphere to the film. All dialogue is clear and crisp, and everything is audible. It`s just not that exciting. The soundtrack has a distinct 1980s theme to it.
As with many of these catalogue titles, you can also choose from various other European languages.
Features
Nothing.
Conclusion
Another day, another MGM back catalogue title, but this one is one of the better films.
I was expecting a predictable and dull film, but this is a good old fashioned revenge thriller. You`re rooting for the good guy, you really don`t like the bad guys, and when something nasty happens to a bad guy you`re cheering inside. Probably the best film that John Frankenheimer made in between French Connection 2 and Ronin.
An above average film on a reasonable DVD. Definitely one for renting or picking up cheap.
