Review of Complete Willo The Wisp, The
Introduction
Another case of "they don`t make `em like they used to" as a classic slice of 1980`s children`s tv makes its way onto DVD. All 26 episodes of the British Gas owned Willo the Wisp are here, for just under 10 of your lovely pounds.
It might keep the kids entertained, but more importantly it will definitely keep any adults who remember watching it during the 1980s entertained.
Video
Like The Flumps before it, the picture is pretty grainy, lots of dirt on the print and sometimes shaky. But its probably as good as the day it was first broadcast. We`re not talking Toy Story here, just an early 1980s cartoon series made on a tight budget. The quality of the visuals isn`t important though, its the programme itself that really matters.
Audio
No DTS-ES encoding here, a few crackles and some hiss, but nothing to distract from the voice of Kenneth Williams, who plays *every single one* of the characters with brilliance. The man was a genius, there is no doubt. And there is of course that theme tune, which will lodge itself in your brain once more, and you`ll be humming along.
Features
The menus aren`t really "extras" but they fit nicely with the disc. And there is one "special feature" on the disc - use it at your peril !
Conclusion
Children`s TV at its finest. If you ever watched it when you were younger, you`ll surely remember it, and its just as good as you remember.
There are plenty of jokes that would have flown way over your head all those years ago, and they add something extra to the experience.
Willo himself is just the embodiment of Kenneth Williams, just watch some of those mannerisms and the lip movements, you can almost see him in the recording studio doing the voice-over.
And with 26 episodes to keep you amused, this is excellent value. A must have.
