Synopsis:
Welcome to a very near-future Japan, where scientists working for the Ministry of Public Welfare have developed a high-tech, nuclear-powered and computerized hospital bed capable of serving all the needs of the patient. Dubbed the Z-001, it can do everything from dispensing food and medicine to bathing and exercising its occupant, essentially removing the need for any kind of interaction with doctors or nurses. Chosen to test the bed is an elderly, invalid widower, Kiyuro Takazawa, who is being cared for by young nursing student, Haruko.
Shortly after the experiment is set in motion, the Z-001 mysteriously begins communicating Takazawa's thoughts to Haruko's personal computer, emitting what appears to be a cry for help. Concerned for Takazaka's welfare, Haruko seeks the assistance of a group of geriatric computer hackers resident in the hospital, who manage to create and install a simulation of Takazawa's late wife's personality into the prototype machine. Things begin to go desperately awry when the bed and its patient express a desire to "go to the beach". To everyone's amazement, the Z-001 transforms itself from a hospital bed into a mecha-robot and sets about fulfilling its occupant's desire.
