Review for WWE: The Kliq Rules
Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash (Diesel), Triple H, Sean Waltman (X-Pac) and Scott Hall (Razor Ramon) were five guys who came together through friendship in the wrestling business. And the wrestling business would dub them 'The Kliq'.
This documentary looks at how they met across the various promotions before coming together in WWE. Here they ruled the locker room, causing chaos by breaking rules with the office and with the other superstars who hated The Kliq and what they were doing.
Throughout, all the key points are covered such as the infamous Curtain Call when Kevin Nash and Scott Hall left for WCW and the aftermath that followed. The debut of Hall and Nash in WCW and the creation of the nWo which saw them both being just as hated in the WCW locker room as they were in WWE's.
We also see that while Hall, Nash and then later Waltman was dominating in WCW, Shawn Michaels and Triple H also made a huge impact with D-Generation X. With this edgy group playing pranks and making fun, it made the show much more entertaining for everyone. This includes the infamous 'invasion' of WCW by DX and Michaels, Hall and Nash's induction into WWE's Hall of Fame.
Throughout the documentary what is wonderful to see is all five of them backstage still joking about their past and telling stories. At one point, they recreate an old picture from the past and it does show how much the team, despite all the ups and downs (and they don't shy away from the downs, but don't dwell on them either) all five still remained friends.
Across the two disks there are 23 matches involved one or more of The Kliq spanning from the early times of WWE to WCW to newer matches.
This includes the infamous '123 Kid' match between him and Razor Ramon which is possibly one of the best surprise endings to any match ever. The amazing Wrestlemania X Ladder Match between Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon. This is the bar that EVERY ladder match measures itself against and even twenty years later it is still one of the best matches of all time.
There is a superb tag match between Shawn Michaels and Diesel against Razor Ramon and 123 Kid. This match proves that they were correct that when they worked together they brought out the best in all of them. Diesel in his last match against Shawn Michaels before he went to WCW is also amazing and proof that even if he was going to the opposition, these two were such good friends that they both did so much to make each other look amazing in this match.
There are a number of matches from WCW including a great tag match between The Outsiders (Nash and Hall) against The Steiner Brother and also a great match between Hall and Nash that I hadn't seen before which was nice to see.
From WWE we also get some newer matches from the likes of Triple H against Kevin Nash for the World Heavyweight Championship in 2003, DX against Jeri-Show in a fantastic TLC match and also Triple H against Sting from this years' Wrestlemania.
Also included is the MSG Curtain Call and this is the only non-match that is included. I am actually shocked that there isn't more. I expected HBK, Hall and Nash's Hall of Fame Inductions, some more vignettes from the nWo and certainly some more from DX, but none of that is given. However, with the sheer quality of the matches I can almost overlook this and I'm sure this is all available in other places.
The Kliq Rules is a fantastic set and one that everyone who is a fan of one or all of these guys should get. Even if you were not a fan of the politics they would play (and you can see why most people hated them) you can't argue that when they got behind a camera or in the ring they were some of the best performers in the business. This is the set that really proves why after all these years The Kliq still Rules.
