Review for The World At War: The Complete Series- Original Version Restored in High Definition
The World At War is one of the greatest Television shows ever created. Currently rated at Number 11 in the IMDB best rated shows of all time, it has spent the last forty years being the goto documentary about the war.
The eight disks cover every aspect of the Second World War, from the rebuilding of Germany after the First World War, the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, the attempts to stop war and then it covers the spread of the war from every country.
Every time I get a chance to watch The World At War, the history geek in me rejoices. This Restored Edition is just perfect and I really cannot explain how miraculous this show is to watch. if you have an interest in history or the Second World War, then this is mandatory viewing.
I reviewed the previous release which can be found here and if I'm honest there isn't much else I can say other than to remark on how amazing the picture quality is. Anyone who watches the 'Restoring' features will be amazed at the amount of work put into making this look so perfect.
My only two issues I have always had with the set is that there is no commentary, which would have been great to have a contemporary analysis of the footage and also a lot of the foreign language is not subtitled which can often be a little distracting. These are only nitpicking and does not detract from the overall quality of the show and set in general.
The World At War is essential viewing for everyone. I cannot recommend this enough and it doesn't matter how many times I have watched it I still find it an amazing and fascinating viewing. Everyone should watch this at least once to really understand what happened and why this period of history is so important, just as this program is.
