    Synopsis:
This dramatic and true story recounts the breathtaking defeat of British forces at the hands of a 25,000 strong and relentlessly determined Zulu army in 1879.

General Lord Chelmsford (brilliantly portrayed by Peter O`Toole) is the man responsible for the fatal decision to split up the troops based on faulty information provided by the fake Zulu prisoners. Colonel Durnford (Burt Lancaster) is the one armed hero who leads his men into battle with the Zulu forces that outnumber them sixteen to one.

Sir Henry Bartle Frere (Sir John Mills) constructs the impossibly demanding ultimatum which ignites the Zulu chief to an unforgettable show of arms.

this dvd is rotten i made the mistake of buying this in a box set with the movie ashanti.this claims to be in widescreen its not the 2.35 it was shot in.and after the credits it soon becomes cropped .worse is picture quality in the closing scenes you cant see peter o`tooles face with tears running down his face.thec pictures gos all fuzzy like it needed a ariel to pick up a picture.dont buy this rotten pathetic dvd.the film i saw as a young boy at the walthamstow granada i liked it then i liked it now .i just thought mosaic ruined the movie with a poor print and lame widescreen claims.

This film is a masterpiece, sadly the DVD like the VHS by Mosaic is not. Quite how they messed this up I don`t know. One of the last great epics by a British director is destroyed here. Cropped from it`s original 2.35:1 aspect ratio to 1.78:1, the whole feel of the film is destroyed, the battle sequences like the film have lost the epic feeling the filmmakers were aiming for. Mosaic should be prosecuted for such a shoddy presentation.
