Good Luck Chuck
Introduction
Charlie Logan (Dane Cook) is dentist with a bit of a problem. At a party in 1985 during a game of Spin The Bottle, he ended up in the closet with the local weird Goth instead of the girl he fancied. When he wouldn't show the girl his penis, she cursed him. Now he finds that whoever he has sex with ends up marrying the next man she meets or goes on a date with or has sex with too. Or something, it's kind of loose. Either way, that man is her true love and they live happily ever after.
Some blokes, and probably women too truth be told, would love this gift/curse/whatever, and for a while Charlie does. Then he meets clumsy penguin lover Cam Wexler (Jessica Alba) and falls for her. Hmm, now what?
Visual
Not really much to say about the picture, it's a new film and the transfer is as good as you would expect.
Audio
Probably the best part of this film is the soundtrack, opening with new wave legends The Cars and featuring the likes of The Feeling, The Dandy Warhols and Olivia Newton John (!) getting Physical.
Extras
Featurettes - all short and follow the same tone as the film.
Gag reels - 2 of them, I needed stitches from the local hospital after watching them. Unfortunately it was for my eyes as I couldn't take no more…
Deleted Scenes - thank god.
Extended Scenes - thank god they weren't.
Alternate Scenes - what were they thinking?
Music montage - other than using scenes from the film, this is a pretty good extra.
Commentary - sorry but I wasn't about to waste yet more time…
Overall
I'm not really sure just who this film is aimed at, I'm not even convinced that the cast and crew of this film really did either. It's part rom-com and part gross-out comedy, or at least an attempt at it in the same kind of vein as American Pie and all its derivatives. Personally I just don't think it works as a cross-genre piece, it really needed to decide which camp to sit in and then stick to it.
This is not to say that this film is completely unfunny, I actually found my self laughing at various junctures during the opening third or so. The problem, apart from the rather blatant sex, is when Logan discovers the curse is real after sleeping with Wex. At this point he becomes the stalker from hell as he attempts to stop her meeting her true love as per everyone before her. That isn't funny, it's clearly supposed to be, but it isn't.
Jessica Alba is ok, but she clearly is much better than this film. Dan Fogler is quite funny as the overweight buddy who never gets any sex, but that's really about it bar the child actors at the beginning. Please avoid. If you don't, you can't say you weren't warned.
