Review for WWE: Shawn Michaels - My Journey
This being his third DVD set you wonder if there is anything missing from the career of Shawn Michaels? Now, I should start by saying, those expecting the Wrestlemania X Ladder Match, Iron Man, Hell in a Cell…etc. etc. Sorry, you best go find his previous collections, this set feels a lot like the 'unreleased' Hulk Hogan set that was released a few months back and unlike the previous set, Heartbreak and Triumph there is no in-depth look at his career. Instead we have Michael Cole, of all people, interviewing Shawn Michaels about his career which is then intercut with twenty classic matches. These interview sections are ok in general though Cole's constant looking at his notes makes you wonder has he learnt nothing in his over decade-long career in the business. Even I would be able to do an off the cuff run down of Michaels career without looking at my notes constantly. Though unlike a lot of the other small chat, match, small chat, match, DVDs that WWE have produced recently, this one gave enough time for each segment, though I still would have preferred a long interview and then two disks of matches.
The matches themselves are great. They prove that even in his early years Michaels was amazing and throughout his career he just got better and better. The majority of the matches come from the WWE, though some rarities from the AWA and WCCW are fascinating look at how his style developed in a tag team and in different promotions. One of the biggest positives of this set is that there are no cross-over matches from the previous two sets and so if you are just looking for Michaels' matches that you don't own then it is a perfect set. However, I should make a point of saying that no matter how good Michaels is (and he is undoubtedly one of the best) the matches here are a little hit and miss. Sure, his casket match against Undertaker is great, the matches as The Rockers are amazing and even some of the one-off matches against Chris Jericho, Ric Flair and Bret Hart are some of the best I have seen, there is still a lot of stuff here that I really will never watch again. A lot of the time I found myself saying, 'The match against Mankind was good, but really against the Mind Games match, it pales in comparison.' Though again, if you do have the previous two sets you will not be complaining as this isn't so much a 'Greatest Hits' collection, more a 'More Greatest Hits' set. The set also includes the almost perfect Wrestlemania match against The Undertaker. I won't explain why I say 'almost perfect', but for those who have never seen it, it is possibly one of the best performances by either superstar.
Shawn Michaels: My Journey is a must have for Shawn Michaels fans… no scratch that… it is a must have for all wrestling fans FULL STOP! Even if you are not a fan of Michaels, you have to admit that inside that ring, in any match scenario, there is no one better than The Heartbreak Kid!
