Review for Robin-B-Hood (2 Discs)
Jackie Chan and Louis Koo star as thieves who end up having to hold onto a baby during one heist. This leads to them having to learn to take care of the baby and of course all sorts of hijinks ensue. There's not much else to say when it comes to the plot as it is simply a montage of fighting scenes and dialogue. There is a needless back story with Chan's character having a gambling addiction, but it's never properly explored or indeed explained either. However, it should be noted that this film has about as much to do with Robin Hood as Michael Bay's Pearl Harbour had to do about Pearl Harbour.
Watching this, it made me wish that Jackie Chan would make a serious film sometimes. Although I often enjoy his comedies, I get the feeling when watching them that I have seen the same fight, same setup, same funny moment in every film he has made. Most are pretty good in at least making me laugh, this one wasn't. I'm not actually sure why that was, maybe it was that the essential subject matter, including the grim ending is a little too dark, maybe it was just the bizarreness of the mix of Three Men and a Baby and Ocean's Eleven-type feel that just didn't work for me. Overall, I watched feeling very restless and at almost two hours the film overstays its welcome at around the ninety minute mark. The other issue is that it seems instead of dubbing the film, then using the dubbed speech for the English subtitles, someone has decided to translate the original language for the subtitles and then just dubbed on completely different dialogue which is bizarre to say the very least.
To give this film two disks seems a little overkill for me and although for Chan fans this would be wonderful, it is doubtful that the casual fan would care about watching them. That being said the extras are very comprehensive with two making of featurettes, interviews with stars Jackie Chan, Conroy Chan the Director Benny Chan and a trailer. I do wish they had included a full screen version of the bloopers from the end of the film which I found very entertaining particularly the ruined one take roof shot (You'll see!).
Robin-B-Hood has robbed me of two rich hours of my life and this never went to feed the poor. It's an average film, it is not bad by any means, but it's certainly not a film I would recommend.
