Synopsis:
In the lawless world of 18th century Japan, disputes among outlaw samurai warriors are settled with the sword and only the most adept swordsmen can survive for very long. But one man stands alone and for him the usual rules do not apply. A highly skilled samurai, Manji has earned himself a fearsome reputation as the killer of 100 honest men. Among his victims are his own Lord and the husband of his sister, Machi, who is driven mad upon witnessing her husband's murder at the hand of her brother.
Just as he realises there is nothing worthwhile left in his future but death, Manji is granted the gift of eternal life by an aged nun, Yaobikuni, who places into his body sacred bloodworms, creatures able to repair Manji's wounds even to the point of reattaching severed limbs. What to some would be considered a blessing soon turns out to be a curse for the samurai, as Manji rapidly grows weary of his immortality. Manji is compelled to make a deal with Yaobikuni. If he can redeem himself by killing 1,000 evil men, she will remove the worms, allowing him die. No sooner is the deal struck than Manji is approached by an angry young woman, Rin, who is seeking revenge for the ruthless murder of her parents.
