Review for UFC 119: Mir vs. Cro Cop
It is surprising when Stallone was making The Expendables that he didn't get Mirko Cro Cop involved as he looks like your typical movie bad guy. I could have seen a great fight scene between him and other UFC fighter Randy Couture, but maybe it's just me. Despite being so dominant in former MMA promotion Pride, Cro Cop has never had the same success in UFC. Here he went up against former UFC Champion Frank Mir in what was a pretty hard hitting fight and one in which both men looked dominant and neither should be ashamed of their performance.
Usually my issue with UFC is the fact that fights are too short. But when I think about it that's not strictly true. The fights that end quickly because of an explosive move or knockout I have no problem with, it's the fights that end in the first round due to stupid things like 'strikes' or 'blood stoppage' that I have a problem with. Remember this is a sport that was once banned over most of America. The problem with this event was that every fight went on far too long to the point where I stopped caring. The only fight that was great was Frank Mir vs. Cro Cop which was a great, classic UFC fight involving a lot of action and even though it did go on a little too long as well.
The DVD also includes all the preliminary bouts of which only a few of them are great, most are just average fights that you can understand why they didn't make the main event, though the fight between Thiago Tavares vs. Pat Audinwood was pretty good. Also included is a number of behind the scenes extras which are good for giving more behind the scenes to the fights.
After UFC 118, this PPV was a little disappointing and if anything it reminded me of a WWE event sold on the basis of one match. Usually that's how UFC PPVs have always been, but the difference is that UFC has always been able to buffer the main event with some great fights, this one felt like they just threw some matches together with the hope that they'd get some good fights out of it. Sadly this time it didn't work
