There are known unknowns...
Introduction
A man claiming to be Dr Martin Harris (Liam Neeson) awakes in Berlin hospital with severe head injuries and no knowledge as to how he got there. The doctors inform him that he has been in a coma for four days after surviving a near fatal car crash. Attempting to piece together the series of events leading up to the accident, he discovers that his wife no longer recognises him and another man appears to have assumed his identity.
The only thing standing in the way of the truth is a deadly team of trained assassins who will stop at nothing to have him killed. It's time for Dr Harris to face his identity, his sanity and take back his life…
Video + Audio
Everything looks and sounds great, as with any modern film that's only just escaped the clutches of the cinema. Nothing to complain about. Nice visuals for your eyes and nice sounds for your ears, ranging from car crashes to more introspective moments of dialogue.
Extra Features
Back to the old days of extras here, four bits of PR fluff about how wonderful the film and working on it is/was.
Conclusion
Is Liam Neeson an action star? Hasn't he always been a bit of one? Recent appearances in The A-Team (very enjoyable) and Taken (fun action nonsense) have beefed up his action credentials, and maybe I'll soon stop thinking of him as Oskar Schindler. Maybe.
Unknown also beefs up those action credentials, and it's a fairly enjoyable film too. As with many films of this ilk, you need to suspend disbelief for a while and allow yourself to go with the flow of the film. Just ignore the bit about not getting a mobile signal in a major European city. And don't get too distracted by sub-plots that seem to go nowhere.
There are obvious parallels to various films, including Taken (Neeson goes to Europe for some CIA-style action), Frantic (Harrison Ford gets into trouble in Europe with a briefcase) and the various Bourne films (Matt Damon is pulled out of European waters with memory problems)
This is not going to go down as an all-time classic, but it's a fun action film that has its moments and is worth watching.
