Review for UFC 129: St-Pierre vs. Shields
UFC 129 is possibly one of the best UFC PPVs I have ever seen. Most UFC PPVs hang on the main event and really if anything else is watchable then that's a bonus. This one? I felt like every single fight could have easily been on the main card.
Of the twelve fights nine were all a US fighter vs. a Canadian fighter with the event taking place in Toronto in front of a record 55,000 fans this is understandable. It is a shame that they didn't keep score of the victories as a kind of US vs. Canada event with the final tally being Canada Nine, USA Three. Maybe this is something they could do when they visit other countries as it really did make the matches more interesting and the crowd just ate it up.
On the main event we had UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture against Brazilian former Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida. This fight could easily have been the main event and the ending is astounding. I am usually sceptical when fights don't go the distance or end early, but this finish was well deserving of the Knockout of the Night award.
UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo had a great fight against Canadian Mark Hominick. I wasn't sure if a weight class this low would work or if it would result in a lot of springy action, but it was actually a very good fight with some well thought through moments of attack and defence by each.
The main event in Canada could only be Georges St-Pierre defending his Welterweight Championship against Jake Shields who had been on a fifteen fight winning streak going into the fight.Once again the fight was almost magical to watch. I'm never a big fan of UFC in general; (preferring the campy theatrics of the WWE) but I really enjoyed these two in this match. GSP proved once again why he is considered one of the best in the UFC and a definite future Hall of Famer.
UFC 129 was a great PPV and one that all UFC and MMA fans should pick up. If you saw it originally you will know how good it is and want to relive it and if you haven't you need to view this event.
