Review for WWE Money in the Bank 2015
Apart from the Royal Rumble, the Money in the Bank ladder match is one of the few times when the winner will change the face of the WWE. The winner of the ladder match gets a contract that guarantees them a shot at the world title. Since its inception, these have mostly been run-ins at the end of a match when the current champ cannot defend themselves. It is a simple rinse and repeat thing that has happened multiple times. To be honest, the only time this has worked was the original cash-in by Edge.
This year it really did feel that they were going for a fresh face with the competitors. Apart from Randy Orton, who is a multiple time main eventer and champion most of those in the match had only had brief title stints or never reached that level. Other people involved were Kane, Roman Reigns, Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston, Sheamus and Neville. The inclusion of Neville was surprising, but I'm glad that WWE have gotten behind this new WWE star who had made such a name for himself as Pac on the indy scene and also in NXT.
The match is what you would expect from the multi-man ladder match. It is thrills and spills and to be honest it was pretty exciting to see as everyone in the match had their moment and everyone looked at one point that they could win. I think what also made it great was that I would have been happy with any of them winning.
Of the rest of the card I almost feel like I should just repeat what I said in almost every PPV WWE have produced recently. Nikki Bella against Paige for the Divas title was good, though nothing special and actually went longer than their entrances. This couldn't be said for the pointless lumbering match between Big Show and Ryback, which felt like it was just thrown together to make up time.
My belief that the tag division was getting love from WWE was derailed with the less than six minutes given to the Prime Time Players against The New Day which was a by the numbers match which was fine, but nothing special and felt more like a match that they would squeeze onto an episode of Superstars.
John Cena against Kevin Owens, in a Champion vs. Champion match was great... except that I wish they had put the titles on the line. Owens with the US Championship would have been a perfect way to springboard him into the WWE main roster. Or even Cena winning the NXT title would have given us the Cena/Samoa Joe in NXT match that we have been begging for for nearly a decade. That being said it was a great match and both looked fantastic throughout.
Seth Rollins against Dean Ambrose in a Ladder Match for the World Heavyweight title was a fantastic way to end this PPV. Both put on a fantastic display reminiscent of the great ladder matches of the likes of Shawn Michaels or Edge. I could quite happily have watched this match again and am so glad that I did. This is the kind of match that brings me back, when I think I have watched some awful matches or awful segments, this is the kind of match that truly makes me happy to be a wrestling fan. UFC may get a shocker in 34 seconds, but at least we can be guaranteed at least a three hours of action.
Throughout the night superstars paid tribute to The American Dream Dusty Rhodes, who had just passed away. I thought this was a classy way for WWE to honour one of their fallen brothers and certainly one of the greatest Legends in the business. I do hope (especially with the recent passing of Roddy Piper) that this is something that WWE do for all of their alumni.
Money in the Bank 2015 could have been an awful PPV with some average matches not given the time they deserve. I do wish that someone in WWE would say 'Look, if we can't give them ten minutes at the least, then there is no point putting it on at all.' However, the two ladder matches, the decent Divas match (for once) and a great Cena/Owens match as well as the tributes to Dusty make this PPV one that deserves picking up. I just hope they do something different with the cash-in of the briefcase and if anyone could do this, I think the winner could.
