Review of Dancer In The Dark

    8 / 10

    Introduction

Dancer in the Dark is the closest thing I have seen to a true musical in years.

That`s not to say that we have a film that in any way could be considered joyful but Lars von Trier makes a fine job of carrying the essence across with this bitter story and Bjork`s performance as Selma is woefully underrated and almost uncomfortable to watch.

    Video

The film print is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic and is good throughout however the actual style of the cinematography may not be everyone`s cup of tea.

The film uses freehand camera work throughout and although this can be very effective the overall effect is a little too much for my tastes.
The use of lights and still shots in the musical numbers is very effective in conveying the mood and state of Selma.

    Audio

Audio is a Dolby 5.1 affair and carries the soundtrack well, there is not a huge use of the sound stage but it is used to good effect.
The musical numbers come across very well.

It would have been nice to also see the DTS track from the Region 1 release but I can live without it.

    Features

The DVD comes with a small selection of features including some behind the scenes, interviews and a trailer. There is also a small bit on Selma`s Songs which is Bjork`s album that accompanies the film.

A commentary would have been a nice way to get some insight into the film but I guess that was not to be.

    Conclusion

I find it strange that this film was so universally panned by the American`s.

I am quite prepared to admit that the film is not going to be liked by all but I really cannot imagine watching it and not having something to say about it`s impact.

It is not and easy film to watch but does get you thinking, I am still not sure if I really liked this film or just appreciated it`s uniqueness and I think that about sums it up.

    John.
