Review for Peep Show Series Nine
The Ninth and Final series of Peep Show is a final farewell to the El Dude Brothers, Mark and Jez in this wonderful show that has just gotten better and better as the years went on. Shot from the point of view of the characters, with the inner monologue of Mark and Jez highlighting some of the many insane things that happen we get six episodes of hilarity to finish us off.
Mark's lovelife is as complicated as ever with former girlfriend Dobby, former wife Sophie and former almost-but not quite conquest April all making appearances. Jez's is almost as complicated with him having sex with the woman he is supposed to be life coaching... and her boyfriend too. Super Hans is getting married and going 'straight edge', but does that mean the end of the man who just loves drugs more than anything? And can we believe that Jeremy is turning forty?
Peep Show is one of the funniest and cleverest sitcoms to ever come out of the UK. It is true that its peak was really the first five series, but every series has been hilarious. These six episodes are a little disjointed with an attempt to have a through-line with the reappearance of Dobby and April, but they are still funny with some great one-liners and moments. However, I would say that considering this is supposed to be the last we will see of these characters the ending felt a little bland like it was just another episode. I expected something to really hit home the end of an era and though there was a brief moment of that, it wasn't enough.
Extras consists of ten minutes of bloopers and Deleted Scenes consisting of two minutes of footage of three scenes. This is very disappointing. I expected a making of, commentary or something to go along with the fact this was the last. It would have been nice to have had some interviews with the cast and crew about how they have felt about making the show over the past nine series. The only thing that's done to mark it is at the end of the bloopers the crew and then David Mitchell and Robert Webb wave Goodbye to us. This is nice, just not enough.
Peep Show Series Nine would have been a great series of shows if this was just another round with Mark and Jez. However, this was the last time we would see them and so it felt a little underwhelming. I still enjoyed it and there were enough moments that made me laugh, but it left me wanting there to be more, the fact there won't be, just left a bitter taste in the mouth. Though if you have been a fan of the show through the years, this is certainly still a great one to watch. Just don't expect an emotional ending or you may be disappointed.
