Review for Toast of London Series 3
Toast of London is a show following the life of Steven Toast an eccentric actor who spends most of his time dealing with problems off stage than those onstage. In this third series of six episodes Toast deals with potentially bringing down the US government, with his complicated love life, a sudden obsession with Mad Men's Jon Hamm, an appearance on the Royal Variety Performance, performing alongside a legendary actor in a West End play and fulfilling an ambition of playing at the Globe Theatre (despite the quality of the production).
I love Matt Berry and ever seen watching him in The IT Crowd he has been one of those actors who always makes me laugh with his charm and enigmatic, booming voice. For the second series of this show he won the BAFTA for Best Performance and I would not be surprised if he repeated this again this year. His performance as Steven Toast is just superb and I would say it gets even better with each new series.
Written by Berry with Father Ted's Arthur Mathews the quality is not unsurprising and I found myself laughing throughout every episode and that is not something that happens a lot. This series has some wonderful moments and I was surprised by just how many Guest Stars they managed to pull. Seeing Jon Hamm was amazing and after seeing him in this and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt I would love to see him in more comedy as he has a real quality and comedy performance that is just funny and warm, which is just so unexpected after watching him on Mad Men all these years. The whole cast is perfect and although this could be seen as a one man show, they really do help support the fantastic central performance by Berry.
Toast of London is a show that everyone should discover, or rediscover. Many may not be aware of the show and if not I recommend you seek out Series 1 and 2, before embarking on this one. Not because you need to see them to understand this one, but because you really show experience just how great this show is in its entirety.
