Review of Naked Souls
Introduction
Pamela Anderson plays an artist who is involved with a workaholic biochemist. His research leads him to tap into the minds of other individuals. However this pursuit isn’t enough for him as he can’t actually, and I quote “touch the soul”. Here he meets a man (David Warner – The Omen, Titanic) who has the ability to do this through some ancient tribal magic he’s picked up on his travels. Things start to go wrong however as Pam gets more annoyed with her boyfriend and… oh, what’s the point?!
Look, this is utter rubbish of the highest level. It has the feel of a badly acted cheesy American soap from the 80s. The director has tried to make an erotic thriller and has failed on all counts. Admittedly, Pamela, and other women flash their boobs regularly but this really does fail to stimulate or excite. I mean who HASN’T seen Pam’s boobs?
And the acting, don’t get me started on that! Risible is about the best word I can come up with to describe this drivel. At one point our biochemist is supposed to be able to play Chopin without ever playing the piano before. His attempts at acting as though he can play the piano are just awful – coupled with the fact that he cannot hit notes on the piano in time to the music. And just why David Warner (the photographer in The Omen and Billy Zanes’ butler/henchman in Titanic) and Dean Stockwell (TV’s Quantum Leap) have decided to grace their acting presence to this utter trop beggars belief. They have very little to work with in terms of script or direction, and as such don’t come off any better for being in it. And this point brings me neatly onto the director himself. I can only think that he is a relative of Ed Wood.
Avoid… like you would Ebola!
Video
The picture is framed in a 4:3 ratio and is just as bad as the film. This is obviously taken from an NTSC master tape so even has that cheesy 80s American daytime soap look about it. Skin tones are passable, shadow details are poor and this leaves many areas just looking black, rather than having different shades of grey. Apart from this, the director has little visual flair, and has created a bog standard thriller. Sure, he throws in some grainy black and white footage during “mind witnessing” sequences, but its nothing you haven’t seen before.
Audio
It doesn’t get any better here either as you get Dolby 2.0 I’m afraid. The mix is pretty lifeless. Don’t expect any dynamic sweeps here, or anything that remotely gives the feeling of tension or eroticism that is portrayed on the screen. Sure the actors voices are clear enough – that’s if you like hearing the hammy dialogue stated in that cheesy US way.
Features
A trailer that forewarns you what utter rubbish this film actually is, and a stills gallery, which has stills of Pam.
Conclusion
Using this DVD as a drinks coaster would be offensive to coasters.
