Review of Destiny`s Child: The Platinum`s On The Wall

Introduction

A slightly different music DVD to most here, this disc includes multi-platinum Destiny’s Child’s no.1 videos. Fronted by 20 yr-old prodigy Beyoncé Knowles and surviving half of their original line-up leaving, and then another of the two replacements too to leave just three, this all-girl R&B group have been a smash both sides of the Atlantic.

Video

The video quality is certainly better than broadcast quality, and although the earlier tracks look a little blurry, they get a lot better. The Brits performance is excellent quality, very sharp and much better than you could find elsewhere.

Audio

Audio quality is good, but not outstanding or what you might expect from a dedicated music DVD. The 5.1 mix opens it up but there could have been a lot more effort done to remix this – a few of the tracks sound like they have just made a stereo track go to all 5 speakers, instead of actually creating a 5.1 mix. However, like with the visuals the sound gets better, with Jumpin, Jumpin being the best of the lot.

Features

A bonus video of the Independent Women (as was on the Charlie’s Angels soundtrack) performed live at the Brit awards is included – a fantastic performance that proves beyond doubt that Destiny’s Child are one of the few bands that can perform just as well live as after recording studio tampering! Would have been nice to see the McG-directed video as well, but that would spoil us :-). Also included is a detailed biography (although it fails to mention the numerous changes in the band line-up) and animated (slightly) menus.

Conclusion

Great for the Destiny’s Child fans out there, but it is a little hard to recommend this to the average R&B listener considering there is only 24 minutes of videos and it’s priced at full RRP. The songs have been well chosen (although there are too few) and I personally prefer the Jumpin, Jumpin remix included here as it features Lil Bow Wow, who rocks! What did irritate me was the noticeable censoring of swear words..I prefer to decide myself what offends me, or not! It would have been nice if they also had some live sets and interviews, etc. A well-made disc, but perhaps not good value for money.
