Review of State and Main
Introduction
Boasting an excellent cast, this is a whimsical comedy about a movie set invading a small "hicksville USA" town.
Hollywood does like to be self-referential whenever possible and they have gone to town (literally) this time. Rather interestingly the producers list is nearly as long as the cast list.......
Video
The movie boasts an excellent contemporary transfer. The widescreen picture is crisp and shows no digital artefacts. Colour balance is good, with blacks properly black and only a slight "washed-out" look to some of the outdoor scenes to mar the presentation.
The DVD menu is unexciting but works.
Audio
Audio is excellent, the digital 5.1 soundtrack shows good balance and definition although being dialogue lead, not entirely necessary.
No complaints.
Features
Not a huge selection of things to do once you`ve viewed the movie. The trailer is a trailer and the featurettes are featurette-like with nothing to distinguish them from most other featurettes. (That`s the most I`ve ever used featurettes in a sentence!)
Conclusion
Not bad ;) This is a gentle comedy with a lot of references to Hollywood and the big studios. I guess (and I`ll be crucified for it) I`d have to class this one a "chick flick".
*runs and hides*
Hide the beers, get a couple of bottles of nice wine in, light some candles and have a laugh.
