Review of Porkys & Porkys II: The Next Day

    7 / 10

    Introduction

In response the AFI recently naming Some Like it Hot as the funniest film ever made, a poll of the American public revealed Porky’s is their no.1 comedy. So with a great sense of timing I have to review Porky’s and its sequel Porky’s II: The Next Day, a title in Fox’s continuing range of double features.

    Video

Fox has re-mastered the picture, creating a picture that is good considering the age of the film. Both films are presented in anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen, and have strong colours throughout. Porky’s has a slightly more flecks and grain than Porky’s II, which is to be expected considering it was made two years earlier and had a lower budget.

    Audio

The 2.0 DD surround remixes are, in both movies, free from hiss and has clear dialogue. An improvement over the original mono soundtrack.

    Features

Unfortunately it seems as though Fox thinks having two movies on one disc mean they don’t need to include any special features – a bonus disc would have been nice however, if they couldn’t find the space on the same DVD. The only extras here are trailers for both movies.

    Conclusion

Porky’s took the gross-out comedy trend started by Animal House and made the genre its own, eventually spawning recent teen hits American Pie and Scary Movie, amongst others. As ever with comedies, it’s hard to recommend to others as it depends on your sense of humour. Obviously, Porky’s caters to the tastes of ‘white trash’ America for it to be voted no.1 of all time, but there are many people who absolutely detest this movie also, so you should really have seen it before you think of buying it. This double-bill is great for fans, and although Porky’s II doesn’t have the freshness that the original had, Porky’s remains a true classic of the genre.
