Review of Sabrina

Introduction

Paramount gives Audrey Hepburn the DVD treatment again in this wonderful romantic classic. A remake was made back in 1995 with Harrison Ford, but it can`t really hold a candle to the ensemble cast of Hepburn, Bogart and Holden and the genius comedic direction of Billy Wilder.

Video

The picture, full frame 4:3, is quite astounding. This monochrome movie has been given a new lease of life. Solid blacks, brilliant whites and the full range of greys give it a great feeling of depth and newness. There are a few spot flashes that appear in the top right hand corner on occasion, but not enough to distract you from this great transfer.

Audio

Presented in Dolby Digital mono, the track is very clean with no hiss or distortion. The fidelity of the audio is obviously limited by the movies age and its original mono recording, but it holds itself well.

Features

An 11-minute feature on the making of Sabrina is better than many of the press kit fluff found on some modern day discs. There was unfortunately no trailer and the behind the scenes photo gallery was a little thin and disappointing.

Conclusion

One of my all time favourite classics that still stands the test of time. Hepburn, like the transfer, shines as always and is complimented by a terrific cast who pull off beautiful moments of passion and humour. This DVD gives fans the chance to see the film in its full glory and maybe even better than original theatre goers did way back in 1954.
