Review of Lost in Space

Video

This is a fun, roller-coaster of a special effects space movie, that is full of fast moving action packed scenes. Lost In Space is one of those popcorn munching flicks that you watch when you cant be arsed to think too hard on the plot, and you just want an explosion of video and audio in your living room. Big screen telly and projection fans will love this film, as will the space film buffs. This is your typical big budget, blockbuster space action movie, designed to blow you away with the visuals, and its fast pace.

The DVD is impressive. The video quality is high, and being anamorphic does justice to the fast moving, vivid colour scenes. Everything is so ‘over the top’ in this film, pulling loosely from the original TV series characters. Colours are vivid and not saturated, and the image quality is sharp. A little blocking was noticed however on the PC DVD drive but not noticeable on normal TV/projection viewing.

The film is split over 24 chapters and the transfer is good. The special effects are varied and plentiful, ranging from animatronic greeblies to major use of CGI. Everything a typical recent space action movie needs!

Audio

Again the audio is as highly rated as the visuals.

Dolby Digital fans will enjoy this film. The eerie scenes on the Proteus before the spidery things attack is an audio treat! The scurrying of the spiders all along the Robinson family as they close in on them is incredibly atmospheric, and makes great use all the channels.

Of course the explosions are there to put your subwoofer through its paces, and the roar of the space ships give it a similar workout.

Features

Entertainment In Video have done a great job with this disc. The whole package is beautifully presented, right down to the menus. These are fully animated jobbies with sound, and allow access to a great set of extras.

You get the obligatory cast and crew biogs here, but instead of just screenfuls of text you may be used to from other DVDs, on this disc they have automated scrolling windows for the text. A nice touch.

You get a music video, several deleted scenes, and both the US and International trailers. Also is a nice little section detailing the movie special effects, and finally some production design stills.

A director`s commentary is hidden in the languages section rather than the Features section, which we had missed until some kind soul pointed it out to us!

All in all a pretty good package.

Conclusion

This disc has to be highly rated in both film and DVD terms. The film is real popcorn fodder, and doesn’t require too much effort to enjoy. It’s not exactly destined for `classic` status, containing certain dialogue that rivals in cheesiness to that immortal “It’s a Unix system! I know this…” from Jurassic Park, but a fun film it certainly is.

The DVD is highly regarded, as a special effects film, combined with great audio and video quality, with a nice load of extras inevitably make a good package.

You know if this is your kind of movie or not, and if it is, then there is no reason not to add this DVD to your collection. It won’t disappoint.
