Synopsis:
Tom Hanks` debut as a writer and director tracks the meteoric rise and fall of the fictional 1960s pop band `The Wonders`. The film`s protagonist, Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott), works in his father`s appliance store by day, but plays the drums and listens to jazz albums by night. When a local group, fronted by guitarist Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) lose their drummer, Guy steps in and soon adds a beat to one of Jimmy`s love songs, turning it into the catchy hit `That Thing You Do!` Before long, the band catch the interest of a producer at Play-Tone Records (Tom Hanks) who signs them up, and, within the space of a summer The Wonders have a Top Ten hit and are part of a state fair tour. With their rising popularity however, come tensions within the band, particularly when it comes to Jimmy`s long-time girlfriend Faye (Liv Tyler). With increasing pressure on all sides, will The Wonders be able to follow up their first single with another chart success?
