Review of Some Mothers Do `Ave `Em: The Complete Second Series

    7 / 10

    Introduction

After the success of the previous episodes of Some Mothers Do `Ave `Em, Michael Crawford and his alter-ego, Frank Spencer, are back...

This DVD contains all 6 episodes from the second series, analysed below:

    Cliffhanger
A classic episode, involving Frank and Betty taking a nice, relaxing picnic by the sea. And sure enough, as the title suggests, things go a bit pear-shaped...
    8/10

    The RAF Reunion
Believe it or not, Frank Spencer once was in the RAF. So when he attends a reunion, typically Spencer-like memories come flooding back...
    8/10

    The Public Relations Course
Public. Relations. Course. Three words that Frank doesn`t know the meaning of. On the count of three, everyone groan...
    8/10

    Frank and Marvin
An episode showcasing Crawford`s talent, this however is one of the weakest of the series, but good fun nonetheless.
    7/10

    Father`s Clinic
When Frank realises he is going to be a father, he starts to panic...
    8/10

    The Baby Arrives
The series finale is self-explanatory, and although a bit of an anti-climax (considering the other material), it packs enough humour into its running time.
    7/10

    Video

It is presented in 4:3 Fullscreen, and although this was made in the 70s, it still shows signs of vibrance and clarity. The print is generally crisp and clear, and there are no compression signs evident. Although a widescreen print would have been better, this is perfectly satisfactory.

Some Mothers Do `Ave `Em revolves around a lot of visual comedy, with the majority performed by Crawford (who does his own stunts), and most are amusing, some more than others.

    Audio

A DD Mono track is on offer, and it does its job well, although this is crying out for a stereo track. What you do get is average to be honest, and although it is as good as Mono goes, a nice and ambient stereo (or dare say it, 5.1) track would have been much better.

The scripts are all sharp and place Frank and Betty in some pretty amusing situations, with the dialogue constantly sharp and the set-pieces fresh (if a little predictable).

    Features

Again, there are exactly no extras on offer, except from the amazing scene access. All together now - yay!

The menus are static with some music in the background.

Some Mothers Do `Ave `Em is presented in a black Amaray case with episode information printed on the back of the case.

    Conclusion

Although this is a fair few years old, it still maintains some great comedic moments and a great performance from Michael Crawford as Frank Spencer. The episodes are all good, and marginally better than the first series.

Disc wise, rather poor again - from average visuals and audio to non-existent extras it doesn`t add up to a groundbreaking package.

Overall, this is well worth owning, and like I said before, will appeal to all comedy fans. And, like before, the only problem is the disc...
