Review of Thumbtanic
Introduction
Thumbtanic is the latest in a long-running series of parody filmettes, brought to you by Steve Oedekerk. Here, we have a retelling of
James Cameron`s box office smash Titanic, only with a rather hilarious twist. If you`ve seen recent instalments, such as `The Blair Thumb` or `Thumb Wars`, you`ll know what to expect from the rather short 22 minute run-time.
Just the concept of this thing was enough to make me laugh, it`s so damn crazy.
Video
It`s clean with very few imperfections. Color is crisp, and, while not in widescreen, it is the original aspect ratio and Image does a good job with this release.
Audio
This DVD offers both Dolby 2.0 and 5.1. 5.1 makes good use of the surround elements and is a nice addition to this comedic film.
Dialogue is easy to understand throughout and just what you would expect from talking thumbs.
Features
The only note-worthy extra worth paying attention to is the commentary track. It runs only 26 minutes along with the film, it`s easy to sit through and does feature some interesting insights into the filming of thumbs and the `special effects` put into this movie.
Steve Odekirk is quite an amusing individual and lightens up the commentary track at quite a few points. His personality certainly shines through in the movie, that`s for sure.
Conclusion
I`m not entirely sure what the hell I watched. I saw a fellow-reviewer on this site absolutely destroy Frankenthumb before-hand, and I just put it down to bad-taste on the reviewer`s part, as I was sure that something this stupid could be remotely amusing at worst.
There were times where I felt I was watching a badly made college production, but for the most part, I just totally looked past all the visual cheese & got caught up in the sheer comedy of it all, it really is very funny at times.
The opening credits, with the thumb rendition of Celine Dion`s `My Heart Will Go On` had me reliving my pant-wetting days, Christ was that hilarious! I`m not sure of the retail on this one, but if you can pick it up for a fiver or so, you can`t really go wrong.
