Review of Best: S Club 7
Introduction
First we had "The Monkees"-a band created in the TV Studios, who went on to sell records even though they didn`t play their instruments and in some cases didn`t sing on the records. These days we have become rather used to packaged bands and with all the talent shows on TV they appear and disappear on a regular basis.
Unless you`ve been living in a cupboard for the last four years you couldn`t fail to have heard of S Club. Neatly packaged up by Simon Fuller they represent the shiny teeth and hair that is `youth`.
The S Club boys and girls have appeared in four TV series about their fictional selves. They also produced a series of shows for the World Wildlife fund "S Club Go Wild" This year saw the release of the film "Seeing Double".
Now the veterans are hanging up their dancing shoes and going their separate ways. This DVD is a compilation of their best work-a series of thirteen music "videos" of singles that did pretty well for them.
Featured tracks are their debut single "Bring it on Back to You" which went straight to Number One on its release. "Reach For the Stars" is one of the most imitated in school discos and of course, " Don`t stop moving " a great catchy disco number.
Video
Good clear pictures. All the "videos" featured are of hits but the content is of variable quality. I found them all rather boring having been weaned on the Top of the Pops "videos". The `50`s set on "You" is amusing but the majority just feature the boys and girls dancing. Look out for " Did You Ever? " which was filmed in a building that featured in the end of " Bladerunner ". Only one or two of the videos feature a vague narrative which makes repeat viewing less interesting.
The penultimate song, "Love ain`t gonna wait for you" is made up of clips from previous videos and a few teasers from this year`s film "Seeing Double".
Audio
The sound is only Dolby 2.0 and therefore is entirely based on the front speakers. Its O.K but lacks depth. It does need to be turned up quite high to get a good sound.
It`s fun stuff and kind of addictive-it will get a repeat play here!
Features
There are three publicity puff "chats" with the S Club. They are labelled with the titles of their first three albums. Not much of any interest and one viewing would be sufficient for most of us.
Conclusion
So S Club are no more and the `tweenies will find new bands to bop to. Before they go it`s their last chance to get a few more CDs and DVDs off the shelves.
I can`t say anything bad about them because they are all so sweet. However I found the sound quality disappointing and the actual content a little slim. I`m sure it will satisfy its target audience and will sell a lot of copies as S Club pass into history.
