Review of Tinto Brass Presents Erotic Short Stories Part 1: Julia

Introduction

"Erotic Short Stories: Part 1 Julia" is presented in the Tinto Brass style, but is directed by "some of the most talented new Italian directors working today". Exactly why he`d want to put his name to this enterprise is curious, as the end result has none of his particular flair for the smutty (I can`t use the term erotica to describe this, as it ain`t.)

There are three short pieces to this 107 minute collection of sleaze. They`re grubbier and more misogynistic than Brass`s own house style, but so theatrical that the gonzo crowd won`t go for them. Most noticeable in comparison with Brass`s work is that the three stories have been shot on video rather than film.

Tinto Brass has done much better work than this, and you`d be far better off spending your money on another title than this one.

Originated on professional videotape, the programme is presented in standard 1.33:1. There are no artefacts, and the image is as good as you can expect for a recently made video programme.

Audio

The sound is in Dolby 2.0 Stereo. Dialogue is in the original Italian, so subtitles are optioned but can be deselected.

Conclusion

For me, "erotic" means classy, beautiful, stylish and sexy. It doesn`t mean grubby, sleazy, sordid (or any of the other seven dwarfs). This trilogy of short episodes is anything but erotic. Compared with Brass`s own work ("Cheeky" springs to mind); the box of that movie is sexier than the whole 107 minutes of this tacky enterprise.
